What is Hair Volume?
You know your hairs have luxurious volume when they appear fuller and have movement as well as body and bounce. Usually, when you possess closely packed hair strands and have high hair density on your scalp, you experience bouncy volumes in your tresses with exceptional movement.
Hair volume and bounce is desired by everyone. This is because, fuller, more bouncy hairs changes your appearance dramatically and tend to heighten your confidence level; aside from being trendy and stylish, hair volume keeps hairstyle lifted as well as boosted and also helps to hold any hairstyles in place effortlessly.
Which Hair Type Requires Volume?
Remember we have mentioned in many of our articles that thick hair locks are absolute blessings?
We have said this because thick tresses usually experience high hair density, and that’s why a head full of thick hairs have gorgeous volume, you can style them as you wish and your style holds up better and longer.
But the problem begins when you have fine/thin hairs.
Fine/thin tresses are flat and limp and tend to suffer the most from lack of volume in the hairs as the strands of fine/thin tresses have smaller diameter and circumference, and endure less hair density. And because of their flatness and lackluster appearance, gorgeous volume and body are extremely necessary for these types of hair locks.
How to Achieve the Required Volume?
The technique is Very Simple.
With the right hair products, regular maintenance, and using some styling tools, you can easily sort out the volume problems of fine/thin hairs. You just need to grab the right tools and products suitable for your hair.
Can Hot Rollers Add Volume to Your Hairs?
The answer is Yes!
For years we have been depended on Velcro rollers to create gorgeous volume and body in our hairs and didn’t pay much attention to hot rollers.
But heated rollers with the right features and components can definitely add the luxurious volume in hairs that you have been yearning for. These rollers are one of the most effective yet less appreciated styling tools to adorn your hairs with fabulous volume as well as to create curls as waves.
How to Choose the Best Hot Rollers to Add Volume to Your Hairs?
There are several brands, types, and categories of heated rollers available in the market for you to choose from, but all these rollers might not be suitable to add body and bounce to your hairs.
Furthermore, as we have stated before that thick hair already has more than enough volume and don’t need any further hair lifting, we won’t suggest any hot roller’s set for thick hairs.
Here we will only discuss how to select the best hot rollers for volume in fine/thin hairs as these tresses are lackluster and need volume and movement the most.
The Size of the Hot Rollers
The roller size is very important because the volume you want to create in your tresses depends on the size of your rollers. The bigger the rollers, the more body and bounce you would get in your hairs.
Usually, we recommend different sized roller, from petite to superjumbo, to create versatile curls and waves in any hair lengths. But, in case of adorning your hairs with gorgeous volume, we consider big sized rollers as the best option as they ensure maximum lift and bounce in otherwise flat and limp hair locks.
But the question is how big should be the rollers?
Well, for short to medium length fine hairs, hair experts advise to adopt rollers of 1 ¼ inch to 1 ½ inch diameter because these rollers can wrap your hairs effortlessly for a perfect voluminous look. If you opt for wider rollers for short tresses, rolling your ends around them would be difficult and you won’t get the result you have been wanting.
On the other hand, we prefer 1 ¾ inch to 2-inch rollers to add luxurious volume to long hair locks this roller sizes will provide the maximum lift and at the same time, you would find it easier to wrap your long hairs in these jumbo rollers.
The Relation Between Roller Size and Hair Length
The connection between hot rollers sizes and your hair length is very simple yet extremely important; the size of the rollers you should use to add that extra volume to your hairs depends on the length of your tresses.
Still didn’t get it?
Ok, let us explain more for your better understanding.
If you have short to medium length tresses, you have less portion of hairs to wrap around the rollers properly and if you can’t roll the strands properly, how would you get the volume?
Normally, we suggest small, petite rollers for such hair lengths, but for volume, as we have mentioned before, we need big rollers which are vast enough to form volume but small enough to roll all your short hairs.
Similarly, the rollers for long tresses should be jumbo or super jumbo so that you have the place to wrap all your hairs to create body and bounce in your tresses.
Flocked Roller Matters
It’s a common knowledge that manufacturers offer two types of hot rollers to its customers; ribbed rollers and flocked rollers. To create voluminous looks in fine hairs, we prefer flocked rollers over ribbed rollers for some really valid and strong reasons:
Hot rollers with flocked finish mean that the rollers come with velvet or similar materials overlay; this overlay helps to retain the heat for a long time period but doesn’t impose any risk of burning or damaging hairs as this also acts as a protection layer and forms a barrier between delicate hairs and high heat.
We prefer flocked roller to add volume in fine hairs because these rollers stay put in place for longer (strong grip), doesn’t slip out of place to affect the volume and at the same time also makes the hair texture smooth and frizz free.
Another reason for favoring flocked rollers is that these rollers are also easy to remove from the hairs, which means that there is no chance of damaging your freshly volumized hairs or creating any tangles while removing them.
On the other hand
Ribbed rollers have bumps all over them and have uneven texture; these rollers are not at all suitable to establish voluminous looks because they tend to slip off from the tresses and have the potential to make your already frizz-prone fine hairs frizzier.
Furthermore, as ribbed rollers don’t come with protective overlay, there is a high chance that they might burn your tresses beyond repair.
The Technologies to Look for
We have said before that fine/thin hairs are the only types of hairs that require hair volume the most and for this reason, here we will only discuss the technologies that are suitable for fine tresses.
As fine/thin hairs are delicate and more prone to damage, ionic technology is a “must have” feature for rollers meant for this type of hairs. The negative ions from the ionic technology protect hairs from heat damage and make them silky and healthy.
Another technology that does wonders to fine tresses is the molecular steam technology; the steam from the water reservoir conditions your tresses and moisturizes them for frizz-free locks. The steam also helps to hold your hairstyle for an extended time period.
The Infrared emission mechanism is yet another technology that can be used on fine hair locks to add volume from the inside out. The energy from the infrared emission penetrates the hair shaft and styles them from the inside while sealing the hair cuticles against frizz.
The Roller Materials
Again, here we would only discuss the construction materials of hot rollers that are suitable to add volume and bounce in fine/thin hair locks.
The materials that we prefer the most for delicate, gentle fine/thin hairs are:
- Ceramic Tourmaline
- Steam Foam
The reason of favoring these materials over any other construction components is that these substances heat up evenly with a very gentle amount of heat that styles as well as creates voluminous, fuller looks in fine hairs precisely without exposing them to any unnecessary burns or heat damage.

The Reasons We Didn’t Choose
Remington Ionic Conditioning Hair Setter
This heated rollers’ set from Remington comes with some really amazing features and extra accessories to satisfy your curling and waving needs anytime and anywhere you need.
But we don’t think this hair setter set would be the best to create volume in fine/thin hairs because:
The rollers of this set have thermal wax core interior which gets hot quickly and retains a high amount of heat for a long time period; this has the potential of burning down delicate fine hairs while adding volume to them.
This roller set comes with different sized rollers, which might be “ok” if you want to create versatile curls, but, if your only concern is to add volume in your hairs, the ¾ inch and 1-inch rollers won’t do any good and might feel like a burden to you.
Zinnor Hot Rollers With Clips
This colorful, vibrant and youthful set of hot rollers possess quite a few fabulous features to create some incredibly defined curls and waves in your hair locks. But even after having such qualities, we still don’t recommend this affordable set for volume in fine tresses because:
The rollers of this set have a ribbed finish which is not at all appropriate to create volume in fine hairs; the ribbed body cannot grab and hold fine hairs in place for an extended time and might create additional frizz in already frizz-prone fine hairs.
Moreover, Zinnor didn’t incorporate an ionic generator to this set, instead, the rollers come with PTC heating element that heats up quickly and you might end up burning your fine tresses in the process.
1. Caruso Professional Molecular 30-piece Multiple Size Steam Hair Setter – Top Favorite for Volume in All Hair Lengths
This professional hair setter from Caruso is an extremely popular hair styler set among people with delicate fine tresses as it offers a vast range of amazing features and components to its users to style their tresses with curls and volume safely yet very precisely at a very reasonable price tag.
But these are not the only reason that helped it to score the top favorite place in our list to build body and volume in all hair lengths. Let’s discuss why we like these rollers over others:
To start with, this hair setter set comes with numbers of large and jumbo rollers that are suitable to add volume and bounce to both long and short fine tresses effortlessly. Moreover, even though the numbers of rollers of this set are enough, you might feel the need to add more rollers to your hairs for extra body and movement, and keeping in mind about such scenarios, Caruso offers Replacement Steam Hair Rollers with Shields to be bought separately for your convenience.
Moving on, the molecular steam technology that is incorporated in this hair setter set is one of the healthiest styling technologies that currently exist; it uses current and steam to style your hairs with curls and volume while moisturizing them at the same time to eliminate frizz. The moisture from the steam also hydrates your hair locks and makes them shiny and smooth.
To add more, the ionic technology installed in these rollers also makes sure that your precious tresses don’t suffer from any burns and damages in the process of building volume by locking in additional moisture and nourishment and forming a protective layer over the strands.
Furthermore, the foam flocked surface of these heated hair setters not only hold them tightly in place for excellent volume and body but at the same time retains the steam and moisture so that your manes build bounce in a very healthy way and the volume remains in the hairs for an extended period of time comparatively.
Aside from the flocked bodies, the plastic clips or shields attached to these setters also help to hold them securely in place in your hairs so that you don’t have to worry about the rollers falling off your hairs even when you move or work after putting them on.
Another wonderful aspect of this Caruso heated rollers is the heating technology it incorporates; the water in the heater reservoir use electricity to boil up and form steam which then evaporates to the roller placed on the top. This steam evaporation mechanism heats up the rollers gently to make sure that the tresses are styles properly but are not exposed to any heat burns and damages.
Few Additional Features
- This heated roller set releases 3 times more steam than any regular steam setters
- These rollers can also be used on severely damaged and frail hair locks
- The heater machine produces a clicking sound when the ion feature is on active mode
- This set is lightweight and compact in size for easy storage and effortless carrying around
- The red indicator light signals when the heater is “on” for additional safety measures
- Caruso provides a 1 Year Limited Warranty Period for this roller set to ensure better customer service
2. T3 Voluminous Hot Rollers – Alternate Favorite for Volume in All Hair Lengths
The name of this T3 hot roller set suggests that these rollers were constructed to build exceptionally awesome volume and body in your tresses. If you have a flexible budget and looking for a high-end hair setter set, then this T3 Voluminous Hot Rollers would be a great choice to add volume to your short hairs as well as long tresses.
In the beginning, let’s discuss the roller sizes as they are the most important feature to create volume in your manes. This set comes with 4 Large and 4 Jumbo velvet flocked rollers which are the perfect size to build bounce and body in all hair lengths.
But you might notice that 4 rollers of each size are not enough and you would require more rollers of the same size to style your hairs properly; to cut down your dilemma over the roller numbers, T3 made the replacement of this rollers available so that you can buy as many extra rollers you want of your convenient sizes.
By offering Volumizing Hot Rollers LUXE (2 ct.), T3 made sure that, its users have enough number of heated rollers to create that perfect voluminous outlook that they have always wanted in their flat tresses.
T3 constructed these rollers using ceramic tourmaline materials with a ceramic core and tourmaline overlay; the ceramic tourmaline construction ensures that these setters have the best quality of both the materials and can style your hairs with maximum safety and precision.
The ceramic produces gentle heat to style and add bounce to your hairs safely while the tourmaline adds extra shine and smoothness to your fine hairs for a healthier look.
The ionic technology incorporated in this heated roller set also contributes to the process of making your sensitive fine/thin tresses healthy, shiny and silky. The negative ions produced by the ionic generator seals in hair’s moisture and nourishment and make them smooth and frizz-free during the process of building the volume and body.
Another technology used in these rollers for an extraordinary styling session is the infrared emission; the infrared emission mechanism uses the heat energy to penetrate the hair strands and style them from the core so that the volume holds and remains in your hairs from dawn to dusk.
The temperature setting of this styling tool is also an important feature to talk about; T3 installed dual heat settings and a power button for convenience as well as safety. You can adopt a high heat (which we don’t recommend at all for fine hairs) or a low heat according to your preference, and wait for a maximum 2 minutes to heat the rollers fully. The lights on the top of each roller would indicate when the rollers are ready so that you can start your volume building session.

3. Infiniti Pro by Conair Instant Heat Tourmaline Ceramic Flocked Hot Rollers – Top Favorite for Volume in Long Hairs
This INFINITI PRO Hot Rollers Set from CONAIR has blown our minds because of the extraordinary features it offers to its users at a very budget-friendly price tag. Similar to many of Conair hair tools, these rollers are also very popular and fan-favorite, but its popularity is not the reason we consider this heated rollers’ set as the best for adding volume in fine long hair locks.
One of the top reasons for considering this INFINITI PRO hot roller set as the best for creating that oomph and body in fine long hairs is this set comes with 8 super jumbo rollers of 2-inch diameter which are big enough to lift your hair roots and wrap all your hairs around them so that you can build that perfect mega volume you have been looking for.
Moreover, this roller set comes with only one sized rollers which might be very disappointing for people who want to style their tresses with versatile curls, but for you (looking to add volume in flat manes) this is perfect because you can actually use all the rollers of the set and none of them have to sit idly.
Aside from the size, the flocked finish of these rollers also helps to create bounce and movement in your fine tresses safely and effortlessly; the 2x more flocking holds the rollers in your hairs securely yet delicately so that your super sensitive tresses doesn’t suffer from any frizz and breakages. More secure hold means less slipping off the rollers and hence, incredible volume in your tresses.
Another advantage of the 2x flocking over the rollers is that it ensures 2x more protection against high heat and breakage; the double velvet overlay makes sure that only a limited amount of heat can reach the hair strands, which is hot enough to style them properly but gentle enough to not burn or harm your precious hairs.
The ceramic tourmaline construction and the built-in ionic generator also help in keeping your delicate hairs safe and healthy during the volume building process; the ceramic tourmaline body of these rollers produces a very mild heat that styles the manes perfectly without imposing them to any damage while the negative ions released from the ionic generator locks in hairs moisture to turn your voluminous tresses silky and smooth by eliminating frizz, static and flyaways.
Few Additional Features
- The set comes with 2-prong plastic clips for secure yet flawless and seamless styling
- Incorporates a red indicator light for added safety and convenience
- The fast heat up technology reduces waiting time prior to the styling session
- The cool tip ensures that your hands are safe while putting in the rollers
- The rollers come in a plastic box for fuss-free usage and easy storage
- Conair backs up this roller set with a 3-year Limited Warranty to ensure durability and longevity
4. Conair Xtreme Instant Heat Jumbo and Super Jumbo Hot Rollers – Top Favorite for Volume in Short to Medium Hairs
This Conair Xtreme is yet another hot roller set from Conair that is filled with extremely incredible features to blow your mind. Conair never fails its customers and this Instant Heat roller set is no different; these heated rollers come with all the features and components that we seek for while searching for an excellent roller set to create volume and bounce in short hairs, and that too at a very affordable price tag.
Let’s begin the discussion with the size and type of these Xtreme rollers.
This set comes with 12 heated rollers of which 8 rollers have a diameter of 1 ½ inch which we think is the best size to add mega bounce and volume to short hairs as these rollers are small enough to put on short tresses but big enough to lift up the roots and build an extraordinary voluminous look. The numbers of large rollers are also enough to cover your whole head of short fine tresses so that you don’t need to buy any extra replacement rollers for extra volume.
Additionally, the double velvet flocked surface of these Xtreme rollers also makes the volume building process super effortless by not creating any additional frizz and knots in your already frizz-prone hairs and holding the rollers tightly in place so that there is no chance of them slipping off the hairs.
A strong hold is very much important for short length hairs because there are fewer hairs to wrap around the rollers and the rollers are always at risk of falling down.
To eliminate this risk and also to ensure super strong grip, aside from the double flocked surface, Conair added 12 wire clips in this styling tool set that can be used to hold these rollers in place smoothly so that the volume adding session is uninterrupted and the result is flawless and uniform.
The ceramic construction of these barrels also plays a vital part in the effortless styling process by adopting a very gentle amount of heat to style the hairs precisely for long-lasting volume. This delicate heat also ensures that you don’t burn your sensitive tresses while styling them.
Furthermore, the 85-second fast heat up mechanism of the heating unit makes sure that you don’t have to wait for long before you start your styling process, which means that you can save time and won’t be late for your work or party.
Few Additional Features
- Conair installed a separate on/off switch for easy and safe operation
- The rollers come in a compact plastic box for effortless storage and ease of carrying
- Conair incorporated an indicator light to signal when the heater is on
- The ready dot flashes a red light whenever the rollers are ready to use
- The 2x flocked rollers provide double heat protection for damage-free results
- Comes with stay-cool end rings to ensure maximum safety of the users
- The heater comes with a 5 feet long cord for ease of use
- Conair provides a Limited One-Year Warranty period for these rollers for better customer service
How to Put in Hot Rollers to Create Volume in the Hairs?
Aside from using a great set of heated rollers, the volume and bounce you want to create in your flat hairs also depend on the way you put the rollers in your tresses. And therefore, the process of putting in the rollers is also super important.
But before discussing the steps of placing the rollers in hairs correctly, let’s first talk about how to prepare your hairs so that your tresses can enjoy maximum body and bounce but refrains from suffering any heat burns and damage.
The Preparation Stage: Start your ritual by washing your fine hairs with a Voluminizing shampoo to not only clean your scalp and hairs but to also add some extra oomph to your tresses. The Kerastase Resistance Bain Volumifique Thickening Effect Shampoo might be an excellent choice to clean your hairs from within.
You can also use the Kerastase Volumifique Thickening Effect Volumizing Gel Treatment to condition your tresses for a more healthy and silky appearance.
But if you are not comfortable washing your hairs every time you want to style them with a voluminous look, a dry shampoo like this TRESemmé Volumizing Dry Shampoo would be a great choice for you to clean your hairs without washing them.
Once you are done with washing and conditioning your hairs, dry them upside down properly either by using a blow dryer or air dry.
When your hairs are completely dried out, comb your hairs with a big brush and apply some heat protectant to shield your delicate strands from the heat that you are about to apply. The Kenra Thermal Styling Spray #19 is an excellent hair care product that will provide thermal protection without weighing down your manes.
Now that you are done preparing your hairs, let’s move on to the actual procedure of adding body and bounce to your fine hairs using hot rollers:
Section off your hairs according to the number of heated rollers you have. Use hair clips to hold sections separately.
Take one section and apply some Voluminizing spray at the roots before wrapping the roller; this will add some volume to the hair roots for a more consistent look. You can use the Kenra Volume Spray #25 for extra volume and strong hold.
Now take a properly heated roller and roll it away from your face. The rollers should be placed horizontally all over the head except the sides of your head.
The horizontally placed rollers, rolled away from your face will ensure some serious volume right on top of your head.
For the side hairs, roll the rollers vertically to have more volume than you could have achieved from horizontally wrapped rollers.
Also, remember to put in the larger rollers of the set at the crown and in the front portion of your tresses for a more fuller and voluminous look.
Additionally, try to put the rollers as close as possible to enjoy the maximum hair lifting.
Let the rollers sit on your hair for at least 15-20 minutes before you start unwrapping them.
After removing all the hot rollers from your hairs, you will be astonished by the amount of bounce and movement in your hairs.
At this point, fluff your tresses with your finger to get more volume in the hairs and then set the look with a setting spray so that your voluminous style lasts for hours to come.
Women from all over the world of all ages want gorgeous volume in their hairs, especially when they have fine, flat and lackluster tresses. The heated roller sets that we have suggested above would surely satisfy your dream of adding luscious bounce and body in your hairs without much effort. Moreover, most of these sets are affordable and therefore, you don’t have to cut deep into your pocket to create that mega voluminous look that you have dreamt of.
